Early Morning Building Fire
By: Assistant Hoseman Joey Swift
On Monday June 4th 2012 at 0649 hours Avondale Fire Company along with Kennett Fire Company and West Grove Fire Company were dispatched to Creative Play Day Care for reported smoke in a building. Moments after dispatch Chief 23(Cole) arrived on scene with nothing showing but a strong odor of smoke from the exterior. After further investigation Chief Cole reported a heavy smoke condition inside the building with no visible fire. At 0656 hours ladder 22 went en-route, and at 0657 hours Engine 24-1, and Engine 23-2 went responding. Prior to arriving on scene Engine 24-1’s orders were to pull an 1-3\4 hand line to the first floor of the structure and go in and find the cause of the smoke, Engine 23-2’s orders were to position the truck for a reverse lay to the hydrant if needed and send the crew to the basement of the building to also check for the cause of the smoke or any extensions. Engine 23-2’s crew found no extensions to the basement, and assisted 24’s crew on the first floor. At that time the fire was found and was traced back to an electrical shortage from an air conditioner. After the fire was knocked down the incident was placed under control with all units working. Ladder 22 then arrived on scene and checked for extensions to the roof and the interior crews checked for extensions in the walls, both came up negative. After ventilation and minor overhaul\salvage all units were clear of the scene.
